Move In Day?
We are spending the summer of 2010 preparing for our grand opening of the orphanage this fall. I just returned from the site where we worked on the Volunteer and Administrative quarters. We all became painters and movers. Although July brings out the HHH in Haiti, with temperatures averaging 100 degrees and daily thunderstorms, we managed to get quite a bit accomplished. However, nothing is ever easy in Haiti. We had to go to Port Au Prince to purchase furniture. Then we had to hire a truck to take the furniture to Hinche (about 80 miles away). We also had to hire “security” to ride along in the truck to make sure it went to Hinche. The truck broke down along the way and did not arrive until the next day. All of the furniture arrived, but some was a little banged up from the rough ride on difficult roads.
HELP WANTED: As we continue to prepare for the grand opening, we could use volunteers that have skills with carpentry, electricity, tile work, plumbing, masonry and painting. Applications should be submitted to COHH on its website, c/o James L. Lipscomb
Volunteers Blogging
We have several volunteers on site this summer. Some will use this blog to convey their experiences in Haiti. The photograph ar right was taken at the Maguana Hotel in Hinche before we moved onto the site. Jean Pierre is not a gourment cook, but he requires a big breakfast. Spaghetti and choclate peanut butter is quite an eye opener. The “catch up” (I swear that’s what it is called) is used on the spaghetti. Given that the juice does not come from a bottle or a can, I think he will pass on the juice and may be go for the hot coffee.
Robin Fryday will be joining us in Hinche during the month of August. Although internet service is very difficult in Hinche, she promises to do her best to blog often to let us know what is happening during her stay.
